What to pack for Australia in March
Our three week holiday to Australia was actually the start of a three month adventure. So what I packed for Australia was also what I packed for The Philippines, Sri Lanka, South Korea, and Japan.
But if you’re going to Australia in March and travelling across different states, the chances are you’ll need slightly different clothing for different areas anyway.
We went to:
Cities (Sydney, Melbourne, Hobart)
The outback (Uluru-Kata-Tjuta National Park)
Beach towns (Great Ocean Road, Airlie Beach, Port Douglas)
National parks (Blue Mountains, Great Ocean Road, Freycinet, Bruny Island, the Whitsundays, Daintree rainforest)
Here’s what I packed for three weeks in Australia to cover all these landscapes. This packing list also took into account weather forecasts ranging from 39°c in the outback to 7°c on Tasmanian mornings and a bit of rain along Great Ocean Road.
My three week Australia packing list
On top:
Five t-shirts
Three vest tops
Three dresses
One jumpsuit
Two sports bras (styles that could be worn as crop tops if needed)
I didn’t change how I dressed between day and night but if you want to bring something nicer to dress up, make that one of your dresses.
For layers:
A hoodie
A sweatshirt
A plaid shirt
A cord shacket (which I didn’t end up needing to wear!)
A light waterproof jacket
On the bottom:
Four pairs of shorts (including pairs for exercise/hiking)
Two pairs of loose cotton trousers
One pair of leggings
One skirt (which I didn’t wear)
For my feet:
One pair of sandals (Birkenstock Evas which are waterproof)
Two pairs of trainers (white hi-top Converse, black Adidas Spezials)
One pair of trainers for running and hiking (Adidas UltraBoost)
Australia is really chill and I don’t think I saw anyone in heels the whole time I was there. But if you want to bring a nicer pair of shoes for evenings make it a versatile pair of sandals that you can wear in the day too.
Accessories etc:
Sunglasses
Two hats (one cap one bucket hat for more coverage)
A hair wrap
A beach cover up
3 bikinis
10 pairs of socks and underwear
A backpack (also to be used as carry-on luggage)
A small daytime/evening bag (I used the Uniqlo bumbag)
A canvas tote bag (useful for shopping and can be used as a light beach or pool bag)
Toiletries:
Toothbrush + paste + floss
Face wash/cleanser
SPF face cream
Reusable face pads/flannel
Deodorant
Body butter/moisturiser
Hair brush (I use a Tangle Teezer that’s a handy size for travel)
Scrunchie + hair ties
Lip balm (with SPF if possible)
Sanitizer and hand cream
Enough pills and other medications, if needed
A block of shampoo + conditioner in case you stay somewhere that doesn’t provide them
Enough pills and other medications, if needed
Enough period products, if needed
Everything else:
Passport
Visas (our IMMI was approved within minutes)
Driving licences (check if you need an international drivers licence)
Travel insurance
Vaccine proof (if needed)
Travel adaptors + chargers
Microfibre travel towel
Pocket blanket (lighter and easier than a beach blanket)
Air tags (one for checked luggage, one for day bag but you could use one for both)
Laptop + charger (if you need it)
Books or an e-reader + charger
Battery pack + charger
Water bottle
FlipBelt (useful for exercise and hikes, and storing valuables while travelling)
Dry bag (if you’re doing any boat tours, snorkelling, or other water activities)
Cutlery + tupperware
Travel detergent (although we were able to use laundry facilities at some of our accommodation)
First aid kit (including antihistamines and bite cream, sleeping tablets, pain killers, plenty of plasters, antiseptic wipes, and gauze)
