The best hikes and walks in Lanzarote

timanfaya national park

We were pleasantly surprised to find that there was more to do in Lanzarote than just relax in resort hotels. The beaches are beautiful, its history is fascinating, and there are a number of walking routes to follow. Hikes in Lanzarote vary in their levels of difficulty. But all of them offer stunning views across the island.

Hikes in Lanzarote

wine fields in lanzarote

We visited Lanzarote in November. So the weather was mild enough to hike without many layers, and without having to worry too much about the scorching afternoon sun. However in summer, you'll need to make sure you have plenty of water, sun protection, and clothing that covers your skin while keeping you cool.

All of these hikes were free to do, and we followed either signposted routes or AllTrails maps.

Caldera Blanca

Lanzarote is covered in volcanoes, but this is the highest. After a 1km 25-30 minute walk through lava fields, hikers can follow clear paths up the side of the caldera. You can walk easily around the top of the crater walls, or go back down the way you came.

This 6.75 mile hike took us 3.5 hours. Pack plenty of water, snacks, and sun cream!

Tip: Park down Camino al Crater. It's a dirt track outside the village of Mancha Blanca.

Montaña de Guardilama

Montaña de Guardilama

This was one of my favourite hikes in Lanzarote. One of the highest points on the island, Montaña de Guardilama has one of the best panoramic views out to sea. On clear days, you can even see across to Fuerteventura.

This hike was mostly easy. But it gets steep near the top and as the ground is volcanic rubble it can be slippery on the way back down. The 4 mile hike took us about 2.5 hours including breaks to stop for photos, snacks, and admiring the view.

Tip: Park along Camino la Caldereta and wander towards Montaña de Tinasoria before looping round to Guardilama.

Montaña Blanca

From the summit of Montaña Blanca you'll have stunning views across the island. A steep hike up the side of the crater is worth the effort, and the way down is a slippery walk down sandy gravel in places. But it's fairly easy to achieve and doesn't require any technical ability.

This 2.5 mile hike took us 2 hours. And though the footing is mostly good, it was steep in places.

Tip: Park at the lay by at the base of the mountain on the LZ-35 (you might have to do a U-turn if you miss it, like we did).

Masdache and Montaña Negra

From the village of Masdache you can easily walk to Montaña Negra, a smaller mountain with amazing views across the island – as all the mountains here have to offer.

We didn’t complete this walk as we were short on time. But there were plenty of groups out on the day we visited dressed in casual clothes and trainers. So it’s a relaxed and unchallenging hike.

Tip: You can park outside the Finca Testeina winery. Look out for the leaning palm tree (Palmera Inclinada) on the way up. Or on the way back, depending on your direction!
