The beginning of the month is the perfect time to organise your life, prioritise what you want to get done and just generally reset and refresh. It is a great time to implement new resolutions (which I don’t believe have to be just for January) to help improve your life.
If you read any of my posts you’ll know i’m obsessed with planning, so there are a number key things I like to do at the beginning of the month to stay organised and on top of things.
This is something I NEVER used to do, but since I have started to save and travel more, I now keep track of my finances by using a little book, though you can also use Excel on your computer. At the start of each month I write down my outgoings, plus anything else that needs to come out for example birthday presents or nights out I have planned. Setting myself a budget for these things in advance means there is no chance of me over spending and not having enough to pay bills etc. I have to admit, I’m a pretty unorganised person and without having a budget to look at throughout the month I would definitely find myself overspending!
A great app for your phone you can use is Mint, which syncs to your phone and bank account, tracking your in and outgoings. It tells you how much you spend on what and where you can cut back to save money.
Unfortunately, we don’t have 100 hours in the day. By prioritising what you want to get done/do at the start of the month, it means you can give yourself plenty of time to get the important stuff done whilst still fitting time in for everything else.
When making a priority list I like to ask myself the questions:
- Why is this a priority?
- How long will this take to achieve?
- What do I need to do in order to achieve this?
Asking myself these questions whilst working out my list of priorities helps me to realise how best to schedule my time as well as how I can tick things off the list most effectively.
What do you want to achieve for the month? Setting goals at the beginning of the month will really help to motivate you and give you a clear focus going forward. Once you’ve set your goals you can then schedule in the time you need to achieve then. Planning this ahead means you can organise your schedule and don’t find yourself stressed out towards the end of the month because you haven’t achieved what you wanted to.
Declutter, deep clean & organise
This is a great way to start the month as it helps me to feel motivated in the space I’m working in. I find I work a lot better in a space that is tidy and organised, plus it is so easy to let things accumulate over time which take up unnecessary space. That’s why having a declutter regularly will help you to keep on top of your things instead of leaving it so long that your declutter becomes a mammoth size task.

I like to do mine monthly by bulk freezing meals into reusable bags, that way I can do a massive shop and prep at the start of the month. Unfortunately I’m one of those people who can never be bothered with cooking a decent meal when I’m hungry, so I always find it’s a lot easier to make healthier decisions when all you have to do is defrost something! I tend to pick seven different meals and make four of each. My favourite way to find recipes at the minute is on Yummly.
Not only is meal prepping a great way to get organised, but it helps when it comes to budgeting at the start of the month. By making a list before hand you can ensure you only buy what you need which you will find will result in a healthier and more cost effective shop.
Plan time to see friends and family
With everyone living really busy lives, planning in advance with friends and family is a great way to make sure you have time to do fun things together.
Quality time with friends and family is always so much fun even if it’s just a coffee and a catch up. This year I made a promise to myself I would make an effort with regularly meeting up with my friends and it has been so worth it!
Review the previous month
At the beginning of each month, you should ask yourself what did you enjoy doing that month? Were you as productive as you wanted? Did you get enough sleep?
Reflecting on what went well and what didn’t at the start/end of the previous month means you can make changes to improve different areas of your life. Whether you have realised you don’t work particularly well at a certain time or from a certain space, or that you didn’t fit enough time in for something you wanted to, reflecting helps you to constantly improve your habits and make beneficial changes.
With our lives a busy as they are it’s easy to forget to take time out for yourself. Some self care once in a while is great for your wellbeing and helps you to feel refreshed and reenergised.
By scheduling time in at the start of the month for whatever it is that helps you to feel relaxed and happy, is a great way to ensure it actually happens! Not leaving enough time for some self care can increase the chances of a burn out and no one can do their best work when they’re exhausted.
What do you like to do at the start of the month that help you to stay organised and on track? Let me know in the comments.
