Where to eat in Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel

boca do inferno sao miguel

The Azores isn’t a typical foodie destination. But it does have plenty of its own, unique cuisine. And since we love to eat out, we were happy to explore the combination of global and local dishes that Ponta Delgada had to offer. These were some of our favourite places to eat in Sao Miguel.

A Tasca

A brilliant traditional Azorean restaurant in a beautiful building. Be prepared to queue at A Tasca! This is the best rated and most popular spot on the island.

Boca de Cena

An eccentric one-man show and some of the best food we ate in Sao Miguel. We stumbled across this restaurant on our first night on the island and the owner and chef (as well as the great food) made Boca de Cena a fun and memorable night.

Otaka

A brilliant Japanese restaurant that was just what we needed after weeks of cheese and seafood. Otaka has a slightly high-end vibe that felt like a good Saturday night treat after a long hike.

Gastronomo

Home cooked Azorean dishes and seafood with a great wine selection. Gastronomo has very attentive and informed waiters, and was one of our favourite places to eat in Sao Miguel.

Sunset Beach

A low-key beach bar with great cocktails and a fresh menu with daily specials. Sunset Beach is right on the beach in Sao Roque just outside of Ponta Delgada. We went there twice – be sure to order the Pina Colada!

Rotas da Ilha Verde

A vegetarian restaurant with a fresh menu that changes regularly. We had to book a few days in advance and still had to wait for a bit on the day. But the food at Rotas da Ilha Verde is worth it. This restaurant opens seasonally. So check ahead if you’re planning a visit off-season.

And a final shout out to the Komaki Burger Truck next to the Monte Palace Hotel. The veggie burger is 10/10 with crispy fries and olives in it!
