What to pack for a holiday in Tromsø

In the first week of February 2023, we spent 5 days in the Arctic Circle. And it goes without saying the the most important thing to consider when you pack for Tromsø is staying warm!

Tromsø isn’t a place to bring your best clothes. In fact you’ll look a bit silly if you do. So focus on comfort and practicality and you’ll do just fine.

Despite being so far north, Tromsø is in the Gulf Stream. This keeps the temperature warmer than you might expect from the Arctic. But when I say warm, I’m talking 0 to -5°c rather than -22°c, which it drops to in other areas.

The trick is to layer with wool, cotton, and thermal tops, socks, and leggings. Uniqlo was my friend here!

You’ll also want clothes for lounging at home and possibly something comfy and casual, but nicer than waterproof hiking gear, for evenings in bars and restaurants.

In February the snow was powdery and we didn’t get too wet. But waterproofs are always a good idea even if you don’t end up wearing them.

This is what I packed for five days in Tromsø in February.

On top

Long sleeved thermal tops to wear as base layers, wool jumpers, and cotton bras.

I packed a base layer for each day but actually only needed half as many as I rewore them. I brought sports bras and bralettes as I don’t like normal bras. And I packed two wool jumpers that could be worn outdoors and also out in the evening.

Choosing outfits that can be worn for different activities is useful when you pack for Tromsø. As multiple thick layers can take up a lot of space in your suitcase.

On the bottom

Thermal leggings, knitted joggers, and a pair of casual trousers for the evening.

I brought a pair of leggings for each day, which was useful as I was able to double up my layers on colder days. You might also want to pack waterproof trousers but I got on fine without them.

I also brought joggers for lounging at the hotel and flying, and a pair of casual but nicer trousers for evenings.

Outer layers

A thermal mid-layer coat, and a padded faux down jacket with a hood.

My mid-layer coat didn’t actually get worn, but was suitable to fit over my thermal base layers and under my bigger coat if needed.

My larger coat was actually a faux down faux leather padded coat from Zara! Which might not sound like appropriate gear for polar winter. But it was waterproof, insulated, and perfect for the weather as I never felt cold.

On my feet

Thermal socks, walking boots, and a pair of trainers, plus shoe spikes. If you don't already own them, be sure to buy these before you pack for Tromsø.

Bring at least one pair of thermal socks per day so you have enough to layer up, and won’t run out if some get wet.

I wore CAT Conquer 2.0 walking boots which were water resistant and warm, and Nike Blazers for wandering around town. Don’t bring rubber-toed trainers like Converse which become freezing on your feet in cold weather, and the canvas soaks through easily. Pick something leather or suede instead. You might want flip flops for saunas but we were okay without.

Spikes or crampons that slip on over the soles of your shoes are essential. They stop you slipping over on the ice, which isn't often cleared from the pavements in Tromsø. They’re a lifesaver, and easy to take on and off – but you’re not allowed to wear them indoors.

The rest

Gloves, a buff and a wool scarf, and a wool hat. A bikini for saunas. Sunglasses in case it’s bright, and usual toiletries + a good face cream - it’s cold and dry up there!

Pack two pairs of gloves that can be worn alone or together for an extra layer, or glove liners. I brought a snood/balaclava that acted as a buff and a hat all in one.
