What to pack for a weekend in Sicily in March

taormina beach

When you think of Sicily, you probably think of an idyllic rural or beachside holiday filled with Aperol spritz and elegant, well-dressed locals. And you wouldn’t be wrong. However, the weather isn’t warm and sunny all year, which you'll need to consider when you pack for Sicily.

And whilst well dressed, the locals aren’t perpetually in long flowing dresses and designer sandals. In fact during our visit in March all the locals were dressed in puffer coats and boots. Despite the fact that the 20°C afternoons felt very warm for us compared to London.

So be sure to check the weather forecast before you pack for Sicily. And take into account the kind of activities you have planned: the beach, exploring towns, and climbing Mount Etna all call for very different packing lists!

This is what I packed for four days in Sicily in March.

taormina

On top

A t-shirt, a long-sleeve top, a jumper, and a sleeveless vest. A casual dress for warm days/evenings.

The weather was changeable and warm during the day. But in the evening it was cooler and it can get windy. So layers were needed – especially when eating outside.

On the bottom

Two pairs of light trousers and a midi skirt.

It wasn’t quite shorts weather in Sicily in March. But loose trousers were perfect for walking around during the day and eating too much pasta at night.

Outer layers

A denim jacket was warm enough for the weather in early March. Which varied between highs of 21°C in the day and lows of 11°C at night. In summer, lighter layers would be fine. And in autumn and winter you might need a bigger coat.

On my feet

A pair of Converse. I’m a pretty casual dresser so these work as day and night shoes for me.

You could also bring an extra pair of shoes if you want. But something flat and comfy is essential for walking around town all day. Taormina especially is very steep in parts, and you won’t see anyone there in heels.

The rest

Sunglasses, a bikini, and a towel for the beach. Check whether your accommodation provides towels before using up valuable packing space. But since most in Taormina and Catania don’t have pools, you might need to bring your own.
