Things to do in San Sebastián [2024]

view of san sebastian

Our first day in San Sebastián in December was bright and sunny. So we wandered along the river exploring the Christmas market that was on at the time. Then our explorations of the town’s pintxos bars began.

Walks in San Sebastián

The weather in San Sebastián in early December was grey and drizzly some times, but not too cold. So we spent a couple of hours walking around the headland and Behatokia.

This area by the sea overlooks Isla Santa Clara, Playa de la Concha, and Playa Ondarreta to the west, and Playa Zurriola to the east. Even on a cloudy day the views across the bay and the seaside town were beautiful, and the walk was peaceful and scenic.

Beaches in San Sebastián

We walked from the famous Playa de la Concha around the bay to the Funicular Monte Igueldo, which took about 20 minutes. It was a short walk that could be done almost entirely along the sand, or along the road.

Walking along the Paseo Maritimo de San Sebastián we passed through the Loretopeko Tunela. This blue tunnel is designed to look like the sea and is a popular photo spot.

The walk around Bahia de la Concha is easy, flat, and has great views of the beach and town the whole way around.

San Sebastián Funicular Railway

The Funicular Monte Igueldo is a vintage wooden railway that follows on track up and down the cliff to the west of the town. It offers amazing views of the town and the bay. And at the top is a small theme park for kids.

There’s also a bar and restaurant where we stopped for a drink. But this is one of the more expensive (and less impressive) places to eat in town.

The train costs €7 per person and opening hours change depending on the season. In December there was no need to pre-book, but it’s worth checking before you arrive.

Eat out

Basque Country, and especially San Sebastián, is known for being one of the best places to eat in the world. Its traditional cuisine is similar to tapas, but unique and delicious.
